Running a faster 5k

With no major races coming up in the next couple months(or none that I have signed up for yet), I am setting my sights on running a sub 23 min 5k.  My best 5k time right now is 24.44.
The great thing about the area I live in is that I can find a 5k almost any weekend of the year.

I know that I need to add speed work to my training, what I'm not sure about is what is the most effective speed work.  Fartlek(such a great word), Intervals, or tempo runs...or all three?  There is a plethora of information out there but I would like to hear from you, my fellow runners what has worked the best for you.   I know there are some of you out there who have superhuman 5K times.  What did you do to run a faster 5K?

If you're new to my blog, welcome! If you're not new, thanks for stopping by!  I love reading your comments and feedback!

Grace and peace,

i like the goal! no suggestions here for a faster time (maybe do sprints in between telephone poles and than go back to your normal pace on opposite poles??).

keep it up.

My fastest 5k ever was in high school... I think it was 22:14.

Fastest since I started back to running: 28:34

I am doing a couple of 5k soon, so hopefully better.

For a 5k, you want to go with track intervals and fartlek, for the most part. That's not to say there isn't room for a race pace effort either--shoot for 3 miles at race pace, or 3, 1-mile repeats at race pace. But 5ks are fast--so you need to train fast!

It is all about the intervals. Do the hard stuff hard and the easy stuff easy.

Hi April,
Oh my gosh, last year I ran in so many 5Ks:) I was almost running every weekend August through September. My first 5K time was 24:51 and my PR is now 23:10! I am hoping to possibly get mine down to 2:45 to 2:30 this year. Trust me you will have no problem getting your time down...just keep at it and run smart:)
